QuickSMS Overview

QuickSMS enable users and companies to instantly send SMS to groups or individuals via a regular mobile phone. Equip with a PC and a mobile phone, the user can start sending SMS. There’s no need for an Internet connection, subscription fees or database setup. The easy to setup and use user interface allows immediate use of the application with little or no training require. The system is suitable for marketing or promotion campaign, sending out alert notifications, season greetings, invitation, contacting employees, job alerts broadcasting, reminders and etc.

Requirements

Operating System : Windows 2000, Windows XP  SP2, Windows 2003, Windows Vista

PC : Pentium III 700GHz 256 MB RAM or better.

GSM Device : GSM Mobile phone/modem connected to PC with RS-232, USB Cable, Infra Red or Bluetooth.

Compatibility: Compatible with most GSM phone/modem (see Supported Mobile Phones)

 

Getting Started

 

Installing the mobile phone driver

To be able to send out SMS using QuickSMS, install the mobile phone driver provided by the mobile phone company. To ascertain if the driver is installed, go to CONTROL PANEL->PHONE AND MODEM OPTIONS and click on the MODEM tab. Your mobile phone brand and connection should be as shown below:

 

 

If the driver is already installed, you should be able to see your mobile phone brand name as shown above. When the mobile phone is connected to the PC, the “Attached To” column should contain value such as COM4 or COM5. When it is not connected, this column contains the value “Not present”.

 

Connect the mobile phone to your PC

When your mobile phone is connected to the PC, place the phone in “Phone Mode” (do NOT chose the “File Tranfer” or “Print Picture” mode (for Sony Ericsson phones).  Check QuickSMS main screen and ensure it had successfully detect the connected mobile phone. When the mobile phone is detected, a description of the serial port and the mobile phone brand will be display at the bottom of the screen.

 

Start sending SMS

You can start sending SMS by using the ad-hoc SMS sending feature available as shown below:

QuickSMS Screen

Main Screen

This is the first screen when QuickSMS start. The screen displays the contacts and the SMS history for each of the contacts. From this screen, you can import contacts from text file, manually add, modify or delete contacts, send bulk SMS and etc.

Drop down menu to access the many more features of the system.

The location and name of the file that is currently open.

A table that displays all the contacts, the ‘Name’ and the ‘Mobile No’ is shown here. The ‘Mobile No’ format is <Country Code><Space><Local mobile phone no>, the number 60 0160132546 where 60 is Malaysia country code and 0160132546 is the local mobile phone no. For a list of all country code, see International Dialing Codes.

 

You can multi select rows from this table. To select all the contacts in the table, click on one of the row in the table and type CTRL-A. To multi select each row in the table, press the CTRL key down and click on the target row. To multi select contiguous rows, click on the first row and scroll to the last row, then press down the SHIFT key and click on the last row.

After selecting the rows in the Contact tables, you can click on the “Send SMS” button to compose and send your SMS message. The SMS message is then send to all the contacts that had been selected.

The “Add” button allows you to manually add contacts into the table.

The “Modify” button enable changes be made to existing contacts. First select the contact that needs modification and click on this button.

Use the “Delete” button to remove contacts you no longer wants them in the table. You can delete more then one row in a single click by ‘multi selecting’ more then one row in the contact table.

The “SMS History” tab will display all the SMS send out for the selected contact on the contact table.

When you chose to “Add” or “Modify” a contact, the “Save” button will be enable. Click this “Save” button to complete your “Add” or “Modify” transaction.

The “Cancel” button will undo all changes made and abort the current Add or Modify operation.

The “Last SMS Date” display the latest SMS send out for the selected contact. This field will be blank if no SMS had been ever send out by that contact.

The serial port QuickSMS is currently connected to. This field will be blank if QuickSMS fail to detect any connected mobile phone.

The name of the mobile phone that QuickSMS is currently connected to.

A14

When the application is busy performing long running routine, this area will show the progress of the routine.

 

 

Sending SMS

QuickSMS supports sending out SMS in bulk or sending out SMS individually on an ad-hoc basis. With bulk SMS the contacts to send SMS must exist in the contacts table, while with ad-hoc SMS sending, you can send SMS without requiring the contact information to be in the contact table. The methods to perform each of these SMS operations are described below:

 

Sending individual ad-hoc SMS

This feature is access from the main menu, go to the menu PHONE->SEND AD-HOC SMS, the screen appears as below:

Key in the mobile phone number to send the SMS to. The ‘Mobile No’ format is <Country Code><Space><Local mobile phone no>, the number 60 0160132546 where 60 is Malaysia country code and 0160132546 is the local mobile phone no. For a list of all country code, see International Dialing Codes.

When completed composing the SMS text, click this button to start sending the SMS.

Cancel this operation to return to the main screen.

Compose the SMS text here. Each SMS has a 160 characters limit, if you compose the message to be more then 160 chracters, the message will be broken up into 160 characters chunk and send out as multiple SMS.

S5

As you type and compose the SMS message, this box will display the count of characters in the SMS message.

 

 

Sending bulk SMS

To send bulk SMS, first select the target contacts to send to from the main screen. You can use multi-select the rows in the table as describe in QuickSMS Main Screen chapter. After selecting the target contacts to send to, click on the “Sens SMS” button at the main screen. The following screen will then appear:

 

 

 


 

 

The screen above is the same screen while sending ad-hoc SMS, the only difference when sending bulk SMS is the “Mobile No” field will be disable. If more then one contact had been selected, the “Mobile No” field value will contain trailing dots as shown at L1 above.

 

Importing Contacts

Importing from text file

QuickSMS contacts can be imported from external source via a text file. The fields in the text file should contain the “Name” and the “Mobile No” of the contacts. The text file fields can be delimited by Tab, Space, Comma, Semicolon, Hash or any other character. To import a file, select “MPORT->TEXT FILE. After selecting the text file QuickSMS will determine the field delimiter from the text file and split the columns. The screen as below will then appear for the user to confirm the text file format:

Chose the delimiter that is use by the text file to delimit fields in the text file.

For other delimiter character, click on the “Other” radio button, this field will then be enable for you to key in the delimiter character.

This is the screen that will pre-display the text file using the delimiter chosen.

From the separated fields, chose the “Mobile No” from the drop down combo box.

Chose the “Name” field of the contact from the list of separated fields.

 

Importing from database

This feature is currently not supported, they will be available in future release or as a customize module.

 

Registering QuickSMS

It is free to download and try out QuickSMS before you chose to purchase the license for it. The unregistered/trial version will only allows 3 SMS to be sent out for every bulk “Send SMS” operation. If you chose to purchase the complete license we will provide you with the registration code and remove all restrictions of the unregistered version.

Other Information

FAQ

 

I get error when sending SMS?

On a normal situation QuickSMS should be able to send out SMS. Following listed are the few possible reasons when SMS cannot be send:

1.      Your service provider had suspended your mobile line.

2.      There’s not enough credit to send out the SMS, you will get error such as CMS ERROR: 50

3.      The mobile number entered is in the wrong format, see Sending individual ad-hoc SMS section for the correct format.

4.      The phone battery had just use up.

5.      There’s problem with the driver, if you’re encountering this problem, shut down and restart all related applications.

 

What hardware is required?

A GSM mobile phone or modem that can be connected to a PC, the supported phones are listed at Supported Mobile Phones chapter.

 

What is the difference between registered and unregistered version of QuickSMS?

Unregistered version restrict the number of bulk SMS you can send in one go, nevertheless you still can use many other features in QuickSMS

 

Do I need an internet connection to use the application?

No

 

What other charges do I need to incur?

To use QuickSMS, you just need to install the software, get one of the supported GSM phone and pay to your mobile operator for the SMS you send.

 

What’s the benefit of registering?

When you register, we will provide support and customize the application to your needs if the effort is not that much to do it.

 

Can I use QuickSMS while transfering file or performing synchronization?

We have tested this and the answer is Yes, but if you’re having problem, try to only use QuickSMS exclusively.
